The concert takes its cue from the hours after dark, when public ceremony gives way to quieter forms of listening. At the heart is a line of English invention running from Lawes and Jenkins to Locke and Purcell, with instrumental pieces placed beside songs that bring words into close focus. Rather than a carol concert, The English Night offers something more inward for the opening of the festival: a winter evening of consort music, song and dance, alive to the season without losing the strange, vivid character of this repertory in performance for York audiences today.
