As part of theYork Georgian Festival, join PhD researcher Tom Ellis as he explores the Georgian justice system—how it operated, and how early 19th-century reforms brought an end to the ‘Bloody Code’, ushering in a new era of criminal justice.
Tom will also delve into prison conditions, particularly for convicted women and their journeys to Australia. Discover their relationships with ship crews, the realities of daily life aboard prison ships, and the challenges of living on the other side of the world.
Don’t miss this opportunity to uncover the often-overlooked stories of these women.
Tom began studying Archaeology in 2018 at the University of Winchester and is currently a first-year PhD researcher in Archaeology at the University of York. His research forms the basis of this talk.
